The Comparison of two or more ratios can be done by performing the following steps.

1. Write the given ratios.

2. Express each of them in the simplest form.

3. Express them as fractions

4. Find the L.C.M. the denominators of the fractions

5. Convert each of the fraction into equivalent fractions with the same denominator.

6. Compare the numerators of each fraction. The fraction having the larger numerator will be the larger.

Illustration: Compare the ratios: 5 : 12 and 3 : 8

Solution:  To compare the ratios following steps can be taken.

1. Write the ratios as fraction

5: 12 Rightarrow frac{5}{12};;;3 : 8 Rightarrow frac{3}{8}

L.C.M. of 12 and 8 is 24.

Making the denominator of fractions as 24

frac{5times 2}{12times 2};;; frac{3times3}{8times3}

frac{10}{24};;; frac{9}{24}

On comparing the numerators we get

10 > 9

Therefore

frac{10}{24};>;; frac{9}{24}

5: 12;>;; 3:8
